ELS Speaker - Adam Abrams, TELC

ELS Speaker Series on Tuesday, September 18th at 12:00 pm in the Eidman Jury Room featuring Adam Abrams of the Texas Environmental Law Center. Mr. Abrams will talk about climate change litigation and the public trust doctrine. Lunch will be served.

This past summer, Mr. Abrams successfully litigated one of the first cases in the nation to use the public trust doctrine to force state action on climate change. (Angela Bonser-Lain, et al. v Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Case No. D-1-GN-11-002194). The lawsuit is part of legal action in 49 states, the District of Columbia, and against the federal government on behalf of youth to compel reductions of CO2 emissions that will counter the negative impacts of climate change. The case relies upon the long established principle of the public trust doctrine, which requires all branches of government to protect and maintain certain shared resources fundamental for human health and survival.

    Screening of MISS REPRESENTATION

Please join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary, MISS REPRESENTATION. We will gather at 5 pm for light refreshments and the moving screening will begin promptly at 6:00.

ABOUT THE MOVIE: Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions in America and challenges the media’s limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States still ranks 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, depression rates have doubled among teenage girls, and cosmetic surgery on minors has more than tripled in the last ten years. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, academics, and activists like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective. FEATURED IN THE FILM: Caroline Heldman, PhD, Associate Professor of Political Science: Occidental College Condoleezza Rice, PhD, Former U.S. Secretary of State, Senior Fellow: Hoover Institution, Professor of Political Economy: Stanford University Dianne Feinstein, U. S. Senator, California Dolores Huerta, Activist & President, Dolores Huerta Foundation Geena Davis, Academy Award-winning Actor & Founder of See Jane Gloria Steinem, Feminist Organizer & Writer Jackson Katz, PhD, Educator, Filmmaker: Tough Guise Author, The Macho Paradox Jane Fonda, Academy Award-winning Actor & Activist Jean Kilbourne, EdD, Filmmaker: Killing Us Softly, Author & Senior Scholar: Wellesley Centers for Women Jennifer Pozner, Executive Director: Women in Media and News, Author: Reality Bites Back Katie Couric, Anchor: CBS Evening News Lisa Ling, Executive Producer & Host: OWN’s Our America M. Financial Regulation with Rob Ellsworth

Created in response to the Recession, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was borne of the Dodd-Frank Act, the most significant piece of financial regulation since the Great Depression. Together, the legislation and the agency that it created are supposed to make the financial system safer, but critics claim it is too convoluted to understand, let alone implement. Rob Ellsworth and Chris DiAngelo will explain how the Act came to fruition, what the current state of the CFPB is, and opportunities and challenges in this area going forward.

Rob Ellsworth has worked for five members of the House and Senate. Most recently, he served as chief of staff to Representative Walt Minnick (D-ID), a member of the Financial Services Committee, at which point he worked closely with the office of Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) to help craft the Dodd-Frank Act.

During Chris DiAngelo's 30 years of practice, he has served as co-head of the structured finance group for Katten Muchin Rosemann and Dewey & LeBoeuf. He has testified before the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services and frequently appears and provides commentary at industry forums on financial and regulatory matters.
