1. Understanding ADR models applied to government agency operations and public policy conflicts 2. Assessing situations for possible interventions by a mediator or facilitator 3. Experiencing stakeholder dialogue models through short demonstrations 4. Practicing facilitation techniques for inter-agency and inter-sector collaboration 5. Applying ADR concepts to your professional needs
Instructor:
John B. Stephens is an Associate Professor of Public Administration and Government at the University of North Carolina School of Government. His areas of expertise include inter-agency and public policy dispute resolution; citizen participation; group collaboration and facilitation.Previously, he was research director of the Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management. His publications include Guidebook to Public Dispute Resolution in North Carolina and Public Management Bulletin: Using a Mediator in Public Disputes. He is co-author of Reaching for Higher Ground: Tools for Powerful Groups and Communities and School Funding Disputes: Mediate, Don't Litigate. He is chair of the steering committee of the University Network for Collaborative Governance.
