The Journal of Law and Technology at Texas (JOLTT) wants to highlight the role of women in technology-related law. We have brought together speakers from various industries to speak about their experiences, career paths, and roles for a zoom panel with students.
Dr. Melissa Wasserman (Moderator) Dr. Wasserman is a professor at the University of Texas School of Law whose research focuses on the institutional design of innovation policy, with a particular emphasis on patent law and administrative law. Dr. Wasserman received her B.S. in chemical engineering from Penn. State University, her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton for her work on thermodynamics of network-forming liquids at low temperatures, and her J.D. from the NYU School of Law. Prior to joining Texas Law in 2016, Dr. Wasserman clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals, was an academic fellow and lecturer at the Petrie Flom Center for Health Law, Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics, and served as a professor at the University of Illinois College of Law.
Judge Beth Shaw (Panelist) Administrative Patent Judge Beth Shaw was appointed to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) on May 19, 2014. Judge Shaw began her career as a junior software engineer at the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). She then entered private practice, practicing at the firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, interrupted by the opportunity to serve as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Shaw earned her J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and a B.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University.
Jessica Jacobs (Panelist) Jessica Jacobs is the VP and General Counsel at Decent, a San Francisco based health insurance company with a mission to provide affordable health insurance for all, and specifically for those who are self-employed. Jessica has served on the boards of 6 other San Francisco based companies as general counsel and in other officer positions since 2010, and has an extensive knowledge of the technological issues facing in-house counsel. Jessica earned a B.S. in economics from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.
Mary Alexander Myers (Panelist) Mary Alexander Myers is an attorney in Jones Day's Atlanta office that works closely with clients on a range of strategic technology transactions and cybersecurity and data privacy matters focused on protecting key data assets. Mary Alexander frequently speaks on technology and cyber-related issues and is a Certified Information Professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Mary Alexander earned a B.A. in History from Emory University and her J.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Law.
