Join Bar Associations to Get Ahead

The winter break is a great opportunity to get to learn about and get involved with various bar associations. The American Bar Association (ABA) offers career-building opportunities, advocates for the profession, and promotes the rule of law worldwide. ABA membership gives law students tools and resources to help them succeed in school and beyond. ABA members get access to benefits, perks, and discounts you can’t get anywhere else. The best part? Membership is free.

In addition to the ABA, there are state bar associations and local bar associations (search list) that you may join as a student at no or low cost. We encourage you to seek out the bar association(s) in the city and state that you’ll land in this summer or after graduation now to take advantage of the opportunity to meet established attorneys, learn more about practicing law, and witness firsthand the importance of giving back to the community. Many of these bar associations also have young lawyer associations, and Texas Law has an Austin Young Lawyers Association – Student Chapter.
