Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship Program

The Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship (CLDC) program operates with one basic goal—to improve diversity in the Mecklenburg County Bar by attracting top first-year law students with diverse backgrounds to Charlotte through corporate and law firm summer internships. To date, the CLDC program has hosted 121 students from law schools from around the country. The CLDC program has a strong Charlotte alumni base and continues to grow each year by clerks either returning for 2L summer employment opportunities or as full-time attorneys.

The CLDC is a program of Mecklenburg County Bar's (MCB) Diversity & Inclusion Committee and is overseen by the CLDC Subcommittee. The current chairs are Alysja Carlisle, Senior Director and legal counsel at Belk, Inc. and Christina Garrett, CLDC Class of 2014, and associate attorney at Alston & Bird, LLP.

As part of the application, each applicant will need to include a brief statement (1-2 pages) explaining how the applicant would contribute to creating a more diverse legal community in Charlotte, and why the applicant would like to practice law in Charlotte.
