Over the last few decades, intellectual property has become more and more central to the success — and failure — of businesses in all sectors of the economy.

At the same time, the uses to which intellectual property has been put have shifted rapidly as new technologies like software, biotech, and techniques for the distribution of audio and audiovisual media have advanced. Those new uses put an ever-growing stress on the legal rules that define the boundaries and permissible uses of intellectual property.
