Description

This course introduces students to the organization and communication of legal information, the nature of the legal information environment, user needs and behaviors in that environment, and the particular roles and responsibilities of legal information providers and institutions. The course is designed to provide a broad overview of theory and practice in legal information organization, communication, and access, and an understanding of the context in which law librarians, legal publishers, and other legal information professionals work. Topics covered in the course include trends in legal scholarship and communication, the effect of technology on the legal profession, and changes in the character of individuals' interaction with legal materials. The course includes sessions on ethics in the provision and distribution of law-related information, legal information policy, legal classification systems, the history of legal publishing, and law-related collection development and acquisitions.
