Description

This course covers a sampling of the legal problems that are generated by the activities of the mass media, including some first amendment theory and history, restraints on publication, invasion of privacy, restrictions on access to information, commercial speech, government speech, regulation of advertising, and regulation of broadcast journalism. It is part common law (e.g., defamation), part statutory (e.g., freedom of information acts), and part regulatory (e.g., Federal Communications Commission), with strands of first amendment and state constitutional law running throughout.
