Description

This three-hour course is designed to introduce the basics of Texas Family Law as related to the marital property regime before, during and at the dissolution of a marriage, and disposition of the marital property and the rights and responsibilities of parents regarding their children on the dissolution of the marriage. Emphasis is on the practical effects of divorce, particularly the economic consequences to the parties and their children. The class will first briefly examine modern marriage in the broader context. Next, the class quickly shifts to the Texas law that regulates the legal aspects relating to separate and community property. The grade is based on a "project" and not an "exam." The project is to negotiate and document the settlement of a divorce case, and then answer 3 or 4 related legal questions in a paper not to exceed 12 pages.
