Description

Alternative Dispute Resolution (2 hour course) This course examines a variety of methods used to resolve disputes outside the traditional litigation process. Both in the United States and internationally, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes have become commonplace. This 2-hour ADR survey course focuses on negotiation and mediation, and touches on collaborative lawyering, public policy dispute resolution, on-line dispute resolution, and other processes for resolving disputes outside the traditional litigation process. We also deal with effective advocacy in ADR processes. This 2-hour course will not address arbitration in any depth. This course aims to provide a broad foundation in alternative dispute resolution for students for whom this class provides their only exposure to the field and also for students who go on to take specialized ADR courses like Negotiation, Mediation, and Arbitration. It is open to all law students as well as to graduate students in other disciplines. This course is approved by the interdisciplinary Portfolio Program in Dispute Resolution as meeting the requirement for a course in basic conflict or dispute resolution theory.
