Description
This seminar will cover key issues in American legal history from colonial times to the present. The subject matter will include historical perspectives on a variety of doctrinal fields as well as on legal theory and the legal profession. The course will be structured around topics, rather than chronology. The discussion of each major topic will thus encompass selected legal issues and problems from different eras. Topics to be discussed in this fashion will include federalism and separation of powers, slavery, race, anti- trust and the problem of monopoly, religion, land, family law, labor law, imperialism, financial regulation, the rise of the corporation, and legal realism. Students will satisfy the writing requirement by submitting several short response papers.Instructors
