Description

This is a survey course covering legal issues in health care delivery, health insurance financing, and the responsibilities of health care professionals to patients. In addition to presenting essential material for those intending to represent health care providers and payers, serve as health care regulators and policymakers, or advocate on behalf of individuals, the course offers students of all backgrounds an introduction to the legal governance of one-sixth of the U.S. economy. Class material changes from year to year, but the course explores the ongoing transformation of health care from a regulated profession to a regulated industry and assesses current prospects for reforming the American health care system to expand access, reduce cost growth, and improve quality. In addition to the core topics listed above, the course will include issues involving public health law, bioethics, patient safety, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
