Description
The seminar will primarily examine various contracts encountered in the music, motion picture, television and legitimate theater industries. A significant part of the examination will evolve from a chronological discussion of agreements encountered in the production, financing and distribution of a fictitious motion picture. Particular attention will be given to the mechanisms for acquiring music for use in the motion picture including composer agreements, recording agreements and synchronization and master use licenses. Several guest speakers will present information specific to legal issues including television and live theatrical productions. While entertainment case law will be examined, the seminar will also directly review the specific terms of relevant contracts. Students will (a) select and engage in research on a topic relevant to legal aspects of the entertainment industry; (b) submit a research paper in compliance with the seminar writing requirement; and (c) provide an oral presentation to the seminar on their research topic. The professor will assist and consult with students regarding the selection of research topics. In addition, students will individually be assigned the responsibility of reading cases from the course textbook, Shepardizing such cases and reporting details on the topic to the other seminar students. Questions and lively discussion of relevant entertainment business issues are encouraged.Instructors
