Description

The seminar will primarily examine various contracts encountered in the music, motion picture, television, literary publishing and legitimate theater industries. A significant part of the examination will evolve from a chronological discussion of agreements encountered in the production, financing and distribution of a fictitious motion picture. Particular attention will be given to the mechanisms for acquiring music for use in the motion picture including composer agreements, recording agreements and synchronization and master use licenses. Guest speakers may present information specific to legal issues including television and live theatrical productions. The seminar will directly examine the specific terms of relevant contracts. Entertainment business current developments and current entertainment legal decisions and filings) will be regularly assigned for class discussion. Students will (a) select and engage in research on a topic relevant to the legal aspects of the entertainment industry; (b) submit a research paper in compliance with the seminar writing requirement; and (c) give an oral presentation to the seminar on their research topic. The professor will assist and consult with students regarding the selection of research topics. Questions and lively discussion of relevant entertainment business issues are encouraged.
