Description

Cross-Listing This seminar explores the development of US counterterrorism policy and law from the 1970s to the present, building on books such as Tim Naftali’s Blind Spot, Steve Coll’s Ghost Wars, the 9/11 Commission Report, and Mark Mazzeti’s Way of the Knife. Students will be expected to be prepared to talk, in depth, about the weekly readings, and to draft policy memoranda based on the readings on a bi-weekly basis. Those interested in a granular exploration of the legal rules and doctrines implicated by counterterrorism practices involving detention and drone strikes should instead take my course in National Security Law; if you are not sure which would better suit you, and you don’t want to sign up for both, feel free to call or email me to talk it over.
