Description

The Law and Bioethics Seminar for Spring, 2009 will deal with ethical, legal, and policy issues arising out of growing biomedical knowledge and control of human reproduction. The course will begin with the abortion controversy and consider an array of other issues that will arise regardless of whether Roe v. Wade is reversed. These include embryo and fetal research, IVF and assisted reproduction, the use of egg and sperm donors and surrogates, gay and lesbian reproduction, prenatal duties to offspring, genetic issues, and international reproductive health. Students will be required to write a first and revised draft of a substantial paper (30 pages) and biweekly short reports on the reading. Another requirement of the course is that students attend a half-day session of a conference on Law and Innovation in Biomedicine--The Case of Stem Cells to be held on April 10 and 11, 2009 and write a report on the topics discussed.
