Description
This small course taught in seminar style will examine a variety of current legal issues related to the American system of capital punishment. Each topic will be covered for 2-3 class meetings, with a goal of studying a few topics in depth over the course of the semester, rather than surveying the basic structure of the legal regulation of the death penalty as in Law 278R ("Capital Punishment"). Topics may include, e.g., racial discrimination and the death penalty; the right to counsel; mental health issues arising in capital cases; challenges to execution methods; conditions on Death Row; and the death penalty in countries other than the United States. The instructor recommends that students have taken Law 278R, but that course is not a prerequisite. The course will have a maximum of 10 students. The course will be graded on a letter-grade basis for all students. Final grades will be based on a term paper. NOTE: DOES NOT SATISFY WRITING SEMINAR REQUIREMENT.Instructors
