Description
This seminar explores the linkages between international economic law, environmental protection, and human rights. The course will focus on the environmental and human rights impact of the World Trade Organization (WTO); regional trade agreements (such as NAFTA); bilateral investment treaties (BITs); voluntary codes of conduct for multinational enterprises; and domestic laws such as the Alien Tort Statute (ATS). Each student will be expected to participate in class discussion, to complete a number of short writing assignments, to write a longer paper to satisfy the seminar writing requirement, and to make an in-class presentation regarding the longer-paper project. Prior courses in international, environmental or human rights law are helpful but not required.
