Description

This class will explore the origins, implementation, and future of the Voting Rights Act. We will begin by examining the historical context in which the VRA emerges and retrace the Court's early implementation of the VRA. This background, along with the political dialogue had between the three branches of government over the course of the last 50 years, should help illuminate current VRA disputes (including several involving Texas) such as redistricting, Voter ID, and one-person, one-vote. These current cases will allow for a brief discussion on the future trajectory of the Court's jurisprudence on key unresolved issues.
