Biography

Dr. iur. Carly Toepke, J.D., joined Texas Law in June 2015. She teaches the course Legal Research and Writing for Foreign Lawyers as well as directs Texas Law's study abroad programs and the LL.M. Program. She has also been the coach of the LL.M. Moot Arbtiration team and the Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court team. She also volunteers in the Mithoff Pro Bono INCLUDE Project.

Prior to relocating to Austin, Toepke researched disability human rights law as a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Lucerne in Lucerne, Switzerland, and the Swiss Paraplegic Research in Nottwil, Switzerland, from 2011 to 2015. In 2016, she earned her doctoral degree at the University of Lucerne, Faculty of Law, on the right to inclusive education for children with disabilities under the UN CRPD. She also taught Advanced Lawyering Skills & Legal Writing at the University of Lucerne. 

Toepke earned her J.D. from The University of Illinois Chicago School of Law in 2011. While earning her degree, she studied abroad at the University of Lucerne for one semester. This experience is what sparked her journey into the Human Rights Law field and passion for educational exchange. She is licensed to practice law in Illinois and is a member of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and International Law Section, the Illinois Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, and NAFSA. Toepke received her bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and German from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008.
