John Beckworth joined the University of Texas School of Law leadership team as Associate Dean for Administration and Strategic Planning in the summer of 2013. Dean Beckworth oversees the Law School’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations and assists with strategic planning and coordination of Law School operations.

A dedicated UT alumnus, Dean Beckworth brings to his position the blended experience of a long-time practicing attorney and businessman coupled with a commitment to service and educating future leaders.

During his professional career, Dean Beckworth has served as a guest lecturer and member of the adjunct faculty at the Law School as well as a multi-year participant, author and speaker in bar and university continuing legal education programs. He is a former president of the Law School Alumni Association and a former trustee of the Law School Foundation. Most recently, Dean Beckworth served as 2012-13 president of the Texas Exes, the alumni association of The University of Texas at Austin.

After completing his legal education at the Law School in 1983, Dean Beckworth joined Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, in Houston where he became a partner in its Litigation Section. In 1994, he opened his own law practice and subsequently co-founded a specialty litigation and energy firm, WattBeckworth, in Houston. During his law practice Dean Beckworth developed and tried multiple civil cases to jury verdicts in Texas and other jurisdictions and briefed and argued cases in the Texas Courts of Appeals, the Texas Supreme Court, and the United States Courts of Appeals. More recently, Dean Beckworth serves as an arbitrator in various domestic and international energy cases and as counsel for a number of public companies and governmental entities.

Dean Beckworth is licensed in all state and federal district courts in Texas, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He has held board certifications in two specialty areas for over twenty years and is an associate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He currently serves as a member of the Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee.
