Texas Young Lawyers Association Diversity Scholarship
The Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) began over 80 years ago as the Texas Junior Bar Association. Growing from an initial membership of 200 lawyers, the organization now boasts over 25,000 members. Each attorney licensed in Texas who is age 36 or younger as of June 1, or who is within his or her initial 60-month licensing period before June 1, is a regular member of TYLA. TYLA has 8 special committees that promote projects and programs aimed at either assisting lawyers in their profession or serving the public including the Diversity Committee.
TYLA recognizes diversity based upon gender, national origin, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, socioeconomic status and geography.
The Diversity Scholarship Program is one of the many Diversity Committee sponsored projects designed to meet the committee's objectives. The Diversity Committee members review all applications and select the scholarship recipients based on the criteria described below. TYLA intends to award three scholarships, first place $5,000, second place $3,000, and third place $1,500 to one or more law students from the ABA-accredited law schools or ABA-provisionally approved law schools in Texas. The recipient must be attending one of these Texas law schools.
The recipient must either be attending or have been admitted to one of the Texas law schools. In awarding the scholarships, the Diversity Committee will consider the applicant’s resume, response to the attached essay questions, letter(s) of recommendation, demonstrated commitment to diversity, academic performance, and financial need.
An application may be downloaded from the TYLA website (www.tyla.org). Applications may also be obtained at the Texas Law Financial Aid Office (Townes Hall 2.122)
