Solórzano Foppa's Human Rights Happy Hour presentation: "Human Rights in Guatemala"

Interview with Julio Solórzano Foppa

Solórzano Foppa speaks generally of the culture of impunity in Guatemala, and the role of international justice in helping to break the silence so long held on the issue of human rights abuse in the country. He gives a brief overview of the proceedings of some cases in Spanish courts, and how Spain has played an important role historically regarding amnesty laws and impunity in Latin America. He speaks of the military's decision to open its archives, and his hope that the new government in Guatemala will make a more serious effort to pursue justice for past human rights abuse.
