Eviction Protection Clinic with Austin Community Law Center

Students will meet with tenants to discuss their legal rights and options related to rental unit damage caused by the February winter storm. When the winter storm hit Texas, pipes burst throughout the state. Some tenants have been without water and/or gas for six weeks, even while leaks have continued and damaged their homes. The clinic will serve tenants whose repair requests have been ignored or received an inadequate response.

Organization

Austin Community Law Center

Austin Community Law Center is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to making legal services radically more affordable. Throughout COVID-19, they’ve partnered with TRLA to take on the overflow of eviction defense cases for clients who cannot afford representation. The Eviction Protection Clinic is a collaboration between ACLC and the Austin Tenants’ Council. Operating under the philosophy that everyone has a right to safe, decent, and fair housing, the Austin Tenants Council fulfills thousands of requests each year for help with housing problems. Austin Tenants Council programs focus on housing discrimination; tenant-landlord education and information; and housing repair and rehabilitation. Their mission is to ensure housing stability by rectifying Fair Housing Act violations and empowering tenants to exercise their rights through mediation, advocacy, and education.
