Students will meet with tenants to identify if any have received notices of eviction that violate new protections for renters that have been adopted in Travis County and the City of Austin in response to COVID-19. When tenants’ protections have been violated, students will help complete and submit complaints against landlords.
Organization
Austin Community Law Center
Austin Community Law Center is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to making legal services radically more affordable. Throughout COVID-19, they’ve partnered with TRLA to take on the overflow of eviction defense cases for clients who cannot afford representation. The Eviction Protection Clinic is a collaboration between ACLC and the Austin Tenants’ Council. Operating under the philosophy that everyone has a right to safe, decent, and fair housing, the Austin Tenants Council fulfills thousands of requests each year for help with housing problems. Austin Tenants Council programs focus on housing discrimination; tenant-landlord education and information; and housing repair and rehabilitation. Their mission is to ensure housing stability by rectifying Fair Housing Act violations and empowering tenants to exercise their rights through mediation, advocacy, and education.
