Psychiatric Advanced Directives (PAD) Project with Texas Law INCLUDE Project – FULL

Students will help persons with lived experience of mental illness draft advanced directives as part of a person-centered planning approach to the treatment of individuals with mental illness by third parties, including medical and law enforcement personnel. The PAD Project involves a collaboration INCLUDE and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.

The INCLUDE Project enables students with interests in disability to provide free legal serves to persons with disabilities and their families. INCLUDE is an internal project of the Richard and Ginni Mithoff Pro Bono Program, in partnership with the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law.

Students should expect to spend approximately 12 hours total on the project during the academic year, including all training, preparation work, and clinic time
Training
Tuesday, September 19, 6pm-8pm in TNH 3.124; training will include a discussion of where to deliver services and which population to target at a clinic that will be scheduled during the spring semester
Skills used
Client interviewing/counseling, cultural competence, skills involved in project development
Project location
The spring clinic likely will be held at a residential treatment facility or state hospital; students may perform other project tasks at Texas Law or an off-site location consistent with confidentiality policy and client needs
