Operation Lone Star Project with Texas Civil Rights Project

Students will work with TCRP lawyers for a week over winter break. Students will research county information for the 43 counties that are part of Operation Lone Star (OLS), a state program to arrest and prosecute recent border crossers for trespassing and other state criminal charges. Students will document county meeting schedules, the format for observing meetings remotely, any mentions of OLS or Governor Abbott’s Border Disaster Declaration at county meetings, social media statements of county officials related to OLS or the Border Disaster Declaration, and media coverage of local issues related to OLS. Students also will draft Public Information Act requests for jail logs related to all migrants incarcerated by the state pursuant to OLS.
