A Dean and a Keeton

When John Keeton, B.A. ’95, M.B.A. ’02, sat down to hear a local band play at the Little Longhorn Saloon, he had no idea the lead guitarist was Dean Bobby Chesney. Chesney, in turn, did not know that the grandson of Dean W. Page Keeton was in the audience. The chance encounter, helped along by a mutual friend in the band, led to a full-circle moment: John, the grandson of the Law School’s longest-serving dean, has made a generous gift supporting Texas Law’s project to build a new residence hall, which is set to open in August 2028.

Growing up in the Keeton family, John says it took years for him to understand what his grandfather meant to UT and Texas Law. “Until I was eight or nine, I thought Dean was one of my grandfather’s other names. That was just what everyone in Austin called him,” John says. “I think Grandad was fairly boisterous in the classroom, but outside of that, he was a little more reserved. My Aunt Carole always had a line, ‘Dad taught the law, but Mom was the law in our family.’”

W. Page Keeton, who continued teaching after his 25-year deanship ended in 1974, helped establish Texas Law as a nationally respected law school with a deep commitment to students. Among his many accomplishments, he is known for overseeing the move to Townes Hall and spearheading a historical fundraising campaign to recruit top faculty. His practice of helping students pay for bus tickets home, groceries, or rent when times were tough is reflected today in the Student Resilience Fund. “Coming from the farm himself, he was the first one in his family to go to college,” John says. “He had a soft spot for kids who needed a little extra help.”

When John learned about the residence hall project, the idea resonated immediately. “Bobby was way ahead of the curve with the idea of providing housing,” John says. “It’s something Grandad would have been behind.”

This project also reflects Keeton’s long institutional influence. In 1952, he helped establish the independently functioning University of Texas Law School Foundation. In 2015, the foundation purchased property at the corner of Medical Arts and E. Dean Keeton streets, across from the Law School. That site entered its next chapter in March 2026, when Texas Law broke ground on the new residence hall. Once completed, the hall will provide affordable housing with modern amenities for more than 300 law students within a two-minute walk of campus. Naming gifts for this project will support an endowment for student scholarships.

“So much of what makes this school successful traces back to the foundation Dean Keeton laid, both literally and figuratively,” Dean Chesney says. “It’s fitting that, as we undertake another transformative building project, the Keeton family is once again playing an important role in the school’s future.”

John says it’s hard to convey how much UT means to his family. “Grandad really believed that whatever he gave back to the law school, it had given him even more,” John says. “We’re trying to balance the scales for what the Keeton family owes the university—and especially the law school—for the opportunities it has given our family. It’s a place that means so much to us. I’m fortunate to be in a position to give, and supporting Texas Law was an easy decision. Even long after he retired, Grandad cared about the law school. Whatever he could do to take care of it came first, and I’m happy to continue that legacy wherever I can.”
