Civil Rights and Environmental Justice

Location: Room TNH 3.126, University of Texas School of Law

Facing construction of a major highway through their neighborhoods, residents of Corpus Christi’s Hillcrest and Washington Coles neighborhoods formed the Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress. Members of the Alliance joined a pending civil rights complaint filed by the UT Law Environmental Clinic and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Their organizing efforts, along with support from Texas Low Income Housing Information Services and The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, resulted a landmark civil rights settlement. Alliance members will discuss the segregation and environmental injustice at the root of the civil rights complaint and their ongoing efforts to provide remedies for their community.
