Texas Law Veterans Assist Vets at Pro Bono Clinics

Through fall 2022, members of the Texas Law Veterans Association volunteered for Veterans Legal Advice Clinics held by the Austin Bar Association at the Austin VA Clinic on Metropolis Drive in East Austin. At the clinics, law students assist attorney volunteers with client intake and shadow attorneys as they provide brief legal advice related to a variety of legal issues affecting veterans, including divorce; child support and custody; consumer and contract issues; criminal law issues; wills, estates, guardianship, and probate; housing and landlord/tenant issues; and bankruptcy. Students have the opportunity to volunteer for the monthly clinics through the Mithoff Pro Bono Program.

Members of the Texas Law Veterans Association also volunteered for the Mithoff Program’s internal Deported Veterans Project. Students involved in that project help prepare humanitarian parole applications for U.S. military veterans who have been deported from the United States. For veterans, humanitarian reasons for parole may include the need to obtain medical care from VA facilities or to assist dependent family members who live in the United States.
