Fulbright U.S. Scholar Catalog of Awards Open for 2019-2020 Grant Period

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Catalog of Awards is open for the 2019-2020 grant period. The Institute of International Education is accepting applications from US-citizen faculty and professionals for teaching and research abroad, and below is a list of some key awards that support or focus on projects in Law and legal studies. Africa, Sub-Saharan

Burkina Faso: Business Administration, Law, or Medical Sciences
9-month teaching/research grant

Mauritius: Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property:
A new 6-10-month teaching/research grant.

Ethiopia: All Disciplines
10-month teaching/research grant available for all disciplines but law is a preference.

East Asia Pacific

Australia: Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Applied Public Policy (Flinders University and Carnegie Mellon University Australia)

Undertake comparative and collaborative research in the field of applied public policy. At Carnegie Mellon University Australia, give guest lectures in both programs and teach a mini-course on applied public policy.

Korea: Peace Studies (Teaching)

Teach graduate-level courses focusing on the causes of armed conflict; how to develop ways to prevent and resolve war, genocide, terrorism, gross violations of human rights; and how to build peaceful and just systems and societies. All teaching will be in English.

Taiwan & China: Cross-Strait Studies Research Program

Conduct research in the area of specialization on an issue concerning the relationships between mainland China and Taiwan. Applications particularly sought in International Law.

Europe and Eurasia

Italy: Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Trento
A three-month teaching and research grant starting in March 2020.

Belgium: Fulbright-Schuman Chair at the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium)
A teaching and research grant for one or two semesters.

Austria: Fulbright-Johannes Kepler University Linz Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law

Four months flexible combination of teaching and research activities that entails at least two courses (classes meet once a week for 90 minutes) and may include advising or supervising advanced students. Joint research with host department is welcomed and appreciated in case of a two-class load.  Open to all levels of scholars, including early career.

Hungary: Fulbright-Hungarian Academy of Sciences Fellowship in Constitutional Studies

Four to five months research.  The Scholar is expected to take part in the activities of the Institute of Legal Studies (ILS) scholars and to participate in common research activities. During his/her stay at the Institute, the Scholar is also expected to participate in conferences and workshops organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Legal Studies, Centre for Social Sciences (ILS, CSS, HAS).  Open to all levels of scholars, including early career.

Portugal: Fulbright Award in Law / University of Minho

The Scholar will be expected to teach the course “Seminars in Theory and Philosophy of Law” to the PhD program in Legal Sciences within three months. An average of 15 students are enrolled in this course every year.  Open to all levels of scholars, except early career.

Spain: International Law at Universidad de La Laguna

Four months teaching undergraduate-level International Law (Derecho Internacional), teaching graduate level Law courses and the Scholar will be invited to present his/her research in seminars and to attend research seminars led by Law School professors. It is expected that the Lecturer will have opportunities for research collaboration with Law School faculty. Open to all level of scholars except early career.

UK: Fulbright Cyber Security Award

Three to six months, this award is designed to enable academic or professional experts in cyber security to conduct research, pursue professional development, and/or assess best practice at any UK institution for a period of three to six months. Research outputs should produce benefits of significance to the larger cyber security community.  Open to all levels of scholars, including early career and PhD is not required.

Iceland: Polar Law
Teach and conduct research with the University of Akureyri, with specializations including International Law, and Environmental Law.

Latvia: Law Award
Specializations: finance law, contract law, IT law

Macedonia: Rule of Law, Judiciary Reform and Civil Society
Specializations: Rule of law and judiciary reform or any area under rule of law; business, media and journalism and civil society or any area under civil society

Spain: International Law at Universidad de la Laguna
Specializations: International law, international commerce, EU law

Norway: International Courts and Tribunals
Conduct research at the Pluricourts Centre in Oslo

Middle East and North Africa

Qatar: All Disciplines
Specializations: labor law, judicial/legal reform, legislative drafting

Oman: All Disciplines
Specializations: law involving intellectual property rights, trade and/or alternate dispute resolution

West Bank: All Disciplines
Law is a priority discipline. Flex option is available for this award.

Western Hemisphere

Canada: Research Chairs in Policy, Law, and Governance
Conduct research at one of four Canadian universities in a variety of law-related topics.

Mexico: US Studies Chair
Teach at one of three Mexican universities. Law is a supported discipline, and teaching can be conducted in English.

South and Central Asia

Nepal: All Disciplines
A five-month grant in one of four university placements in Nepal. Law is a preferred discipline.

Maldives: All Disciplines
Teach undergraduate courses, conduct research, or carry out a combination of teaching and research activities. For teaching, the number of courses taught will depend on whether research was also proposed. For teaching/research, applicant may determine percentage of the grant dedicated to each activity and should define this clearly in the project abstract/summary and the project statement.
