Prestigious Gideon’s Promise Fellowship Award to Paul McDaniel, ‘15

June 1, 2015 — Paul McDaniel ’15 will work as a public defender at the Jefferson County Community Law Office in Birmingham, Alabama, funded by a Texas Law Gideon’s Promise Fellowship. Texas Law is participating in the Law School Partnership Program recently launched by Gideon’s Promise, a nonprofit that works to reform indigent defense through training and support of public defenders. Through the partnership, Gideon’s Promise helped McDaniel secure the position and will provide three-years of intensive training. His Texas Law fellowship will fund McDaniel for one year after which he will move into a long-term position with his office. McDaniel worked last summer in the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Western District in San Antonio. Before law school he served in the U.S. Army. “The law school is very pleased that Gideon’s Promise has selected Paul to receive this prestigious fellowship,” said Eden Harrington, director of the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law. “We are so proud of Paul’s accomplishment, so honored that Gideon’s Promise is partnering with the law school to give Paul this opportunity, and we are so excited to see what he does with it. This is a great day for everyone involved: Paul, the law school, and the people of Birmingham.” To learn more about Gideon’s Promise Fellowships: http://gideonspromise.org/law-schools/law-school-partnership-project/ To learn more about the William Wayne Justice Center: https://law.utexas.edu/publicinterest/ To learn more about Texas Law’s Career Services Office’s public service programs, contact Nicole Simmons at 512-232-1160 or nsimmons@law.utexas.edu
