Professor John Greil Joins the Law and Religion Clinic

After a nationwide search, the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center is pleased to announce that Professor John Greil will be joining the law school faculty as a Clinical Professor to teach in the Law & Religion Clinic. He will begin this Spring 2023 term.

Professor Greil graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and the University of Notre Dame. Prior to transitioning into academia, he clerked for federal district judges Nathaniel M. Gorton (D. Mass.) and Paul Barbadoro (D. N. H.), as well as Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He will be joining the law school from Vinson & Elkins LLP, where he has gained extensive litigation experience and represented clients in foreign jurisdictions, the U.S. Supreme Court, and at every level of the Texas legal system. His scholarly work has appeared in the The Villanova Law Review and The Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.

“Professor Greil is an important addition to the law school and to the Law & Religion Clinic,” says Professor Steven T. Collis, the faculty director of the First Amendment Center and the Law & Religion Clinic. “He will offer important perspectives to his faculty colleagues, and he will be especially valuable to our clients and students. He brings with him a wealth of both doctrinal knowledge and practical legal skills. We’re thrilled and lucky to have him.”

Professors Greil and Collis and the Law & Religion Clinic will host eleven students this coming term, representing clients from over a dozen faith traditions in matters across the United States, including in the U.S. Supreme Court.
