Athena Hawkins
Athena Hawkins is a fourth-year journalism student from Frisco, TX. She is a Distinguished College Scholar and Godbold scholar in the Moody Honors Program. Athena is passionate about open information, freedom of movement and international peace. She spent the summer of 2023 volunteering at a service center for refugees and displaced people in Athens, Greece, where she taught English, translated immigration documents and organized a multilingual library. Athena is passionate about using open information and data analysis to promote social equity. In the spring of 2023, she worked on a digital capstone project promoting book access for low-income elementary school students and a journalism capstone project centered on transportation equity. Outside the Rapoport Center, Athena enjoys her work as a writing coach for the Moody Writing Support Program, where she helps undergraduate journalism students hone their writing and storytelling skills. She also enjoys working on projects at the intersection of data and politics as a data technician for the Media Innovation Group in the School of Journalism.
