Carson Smith (BA 2017, University of Michigan; JD expected 2024) will intern this summer with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in their Southwest Regional Office in San Antonio. MALDEF is the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization with a commitment to protect and defend the rights of Latinos living in the United States and the constitutional rights of all Americans.

 

During his time at Texas Law, Carson has participated in the Mithoff Pro Bono Program, including the Asylum Pro Se and Gender Affirmation Projects. He was a panel organizer for Getting Radical in the South (GRITS) and serves as co-president of the Human Rights Law Society. Prior to law school, Carson was a Young Adult Volunteer with the Presbyterian Church (USA) where he accompanied Church partners in Colombia and worked with the Church’s advocacy office to the United Nations. He also has experience as a paralegal, nonviolent accompanier, and organizer for political campaigns.
