Giulia Oprea

Graduate Summer Fellow (2022); American Studies
Graduate Fellows Affiliated Graduate Students

Giulia Oprea is a current Ph.D. student in the American Studies program at the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to an earlier A.A. in Political Science, they received both their B.A. and M.A. in American Studies from California State University, Fullerton. Giulia’s research is concerned with the contradictions of technology and digital space—in particular, how they’re not only used as methods of social control and an extension of state surveillance but also how they might be used as a means of resistance and potential pathways to liberation. To this end, she is interested in science fiction cultural productions and what they reflect about our contention with the future, our relationship to technology, and how we understand humanity vs. the idea of technological transcendence.
