Hiba Soban
Hiba Soban is a rising 4th-year at the University of Texas at Austin from Kingwood, Texas majoring in Government and Spanish with a minor in History.
Her academic interests include civil rights, criminal justice reform, and education accessibility, but in her free time you can find her volunteering for local grassroots orgs, FaceTiming her cat in Houston, going for runs, exploring Austin, reading, and writing.
She previously worked as an undergraduate intern for Texas Innocence Network, providing research and investigative support for attorneys representing Texas death row inmates. This past year she also conducted a research study titled “Guilt by Association: Criminal System Familial/Proximal Contact and Political Disenfranchisement,” exploring how the incarceration of a loved one affects families’ levels of civic engagement here in Travis County.
After graduation, Hiba plans to study law to channel her identities and interests into a career as a criminal defense or civil litigation attorney. She believes hope and liberation are efforts tended to and kept alive by the collective efforts of many, and hopes in all her efforts—academic or otherwise—that she can remain committed to principles of justice and equity.
