Ilan Palacios Avineri is a PhD student in the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin. His research is broadly focused on militarization, morality, and migration in Central America during the 20th century. Currently, his MA Thesis investigates the relationship between Cold War-era security initiatives and the proliferation of gang violence in post-peace Guatemala. In the process, he aims to illuminate both the psychological and corporeal costs of such policies and how Central Americans' trauma is carried across borders. Before arriving at UT, Ilan received his Bachelor's Degree in history from Willamette University where he graduated cum laude.
