Jessica Carey-Webb is a third-year PhD student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan where she majored in Comparative Literature and Latin American Studies. Between undergraduate and graduate school she lived for a year in a small town in the Brazilian Amazon on a Fulbright fellowship, working at the university and with a local water project. Her current research looks at development, imperialism, migration, space and race in the Amazon basin -- attempting to connect historical literary representations with present day social justice movements.
