Katie Van Winkle
Katie Van Winkle is a Harrington Doctoral Fellow and a Ph.D. candidate in Performance as Public Practice (Department of Theatre & Dance). She earned her B.A. from Swarthmore College and her M.A. as a Mitchell Scholar at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She is currently writing a dissertation examining the centenary commemorations of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising, focusing on performance responding to social injustice, and on the representation of state and revolutionary violence, women's political agency, and the rights of children. Katie creates theatre as a director, performer, and dramaturg with many local companies. She made her New York debut with the Rude Mechs in a tour of Dionysus in 69, and recently returned from an international tour of her directing project Bear Eats Bear. Katie completed two terms of national service as an AmeriCorps volunteer with Literacy First, and now volunteers with Creative Action and assists Interfaith Action of Central Texas with ESL classes for refugees resettled in Austin.
