Meraal Hakeem

Meraal Hakeem is a senior majoring in International Relations and Global Studies and Government with a minor in Arabic and a Creative Writing certificate. Her academic interests include studying global trends in international political economy and the role of women in post-colonial societies. She is currently writing her honors thesis on the effects of economic sanctions on women in the Middle East. Meraal has conducted extensive research in Pakistan where she served as a research intern studying issues of labor, security, climate change, and US relations in Middle Eastern and South Asian countries. In summer 2018, Meraal was an American-Pakistan Fellow. She worked as an international development intern in Pakistan where she consulted a World Bank-funded organization on its poverty alleviation efforts, specifically Legal Empowerment and Business Incubation for Self-Employment projects. On campus, she serves as the lab manager of the Feminist Geography Research Collective and a senior peer advisor at the Liberal Art’s Dean’s office. After graduation, Meraal aspires to work in socio-economic research and policy before going on to pursue law school.
