Mya Rodriguez Gonzalez

Her course load has incorporated a diverse array of subjects including anthropology, sociology, government, as well as a recent focus on religion. Her experience as an undergraduate has allowed her to examine issues of social justice issues through an intersectional lens, and has provided her with the framework to incorporate her passion for the humanities into her dedication to social justice.

Being a Mexican American from El Paso, Texas, she has been a part of the borderland community all her life and has dedicated most of her professional career in Austin to working with immigrant communities. She has worked as an English teacher for Pre-K-aged refugee children from Afghanistan as part of Teaching Refugees to Understand English organization at UT Austin. She then went on to work as a night school English teacher for adult Latin American Immigrants. She has also had the opportunity to work as a programs intern turned programs assistant for the Latina Empowerment Alliance. A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free virtual opportunities for personal and professional development for Latin American women.

She plans to continue her education by pursuing a master's in sociology while studying jurisprudence to become a human rights attorney, advocating for structural change for marginalized groups.
