Charles Helms passed away on Nov. 2, 2025. Helms practiced law in Dallas for many years alongside his friend and partner Paul Pesek, then spent his last years teaching theology at the University of Dallas. He was president of his local Catholic lawyer’s guild—the St. Thomas More Society—and was a member of the Catholic Bar Association.
T.L. Cubbage, who won the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions as a first-year law student in 1989, returned to the popular quiz show in January 2026 as a competitor in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament. With this appearance, he became only the second person to compete in tournaments on the show in five different decades. Cubbage is the president of The Center for American and International Law, is a nonprofit institution based in Plano, Texas, dedicated to advancing justice and promoting the rule of law through the professional development of legal and law enforcement practitioners worldwide.
Kim McMath has served as president of the Eanes ISD Board of Trustees since May, 2025. McMath, who was first elected to the school board in 2020 and spent two years as vice president, is general counsel for Madison Industries entities, a private company with international holdings.
Sam Waldon has been promoted to deputy director for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Division of Enforcement. He previously served as chief counsel in this division.

Donna Gooden Payne has announced her plans to retire as senior vice president and general counsel at the University of Rochester. She previously served as university counsel and vice chancellor for legal affairs at East Carolina University before joining URochester in 2019.
Gary Truman passed away on July 13, 2025. He worked as an employment lawyer at Bradley Campbell Carney & Madsen before founding his own company, Gary Truman, LLC, and working as a landman for 15 years.
Michael Calhoon has joined Bourelly George & Brodey, a Washington, D.C.-based boutique litigation firm. Previously, Calhoon practiced at Baker Botts, where his team scored a nearly billion-dollar verdict in a complex securities fraud case.

Sam Waldon has been named acting deputy director of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Division of Enforcement. Waldon has been with the SEC for 14 years, most recently as chief counsel for the Division of Enforcement.

Colleen Marie Sullivan is the recipient of the Austin Bar Association’s 2022 Larry F. York Mentoring Award. This award honors Central Texas lawyers or judges who have exhibited extreme skill and generosity in their mentorship of younger members of the bar. Sullivan is the mandamus attorney at the Supreme Court of Texas. She joined the Court in April 2021 after 11 years as a staff attorney at the Third Court of Appeals.
