Description

This writing seminar will focus on legal issues arising under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which has governed economic relations between the United States, Mexico and Canada since 1995. The seminar will focus on issues relating to trade in goods; trade in services; intellectual property; dispute settlement; "unfair" pricing practices ("dumping"); government subsidies; investment; environment; and labor. We will also look at how NAFTA compares with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the European Union (EU). Each student will write an individual research paper on a specific topic within an area covered in the seminar. The first five seminar meetings will focus on assigned readings and student presentations. Students will then work on their own research papers, and meet individually with the instructor to discuss their progress. During the last week of the seminar, students will present and respond to comments on their research projects.
