Description

The approach of this course will be to build bridges between the study of constitutional law and political theory. To that end, we will move back and forth between case readings and readings from political and legal philosophers. The emphasis, however, will be on the cases. Topics will include freedom of religion, freedom of speech, privacy issues regarding abortion and same-sex marriage, stem cell research and eugenics, discrimination and affirmative action. Political theory readings will draw from John Rawls, Robert Nozick, Ronald Dworkin, Michael Sandel, and Michael Walzer, as well as from Hobbes, Locke and Mill.
