Description

This course provides a critical examination of controversial current or recent cases in the Supreme Court. Background cases will be read using the new paperback by Choper, et al., "Leading Cases in Constitutional Law" (2007), supplemented by reference to other cases as needed. The course will center on such politically controversial topical substantive issues as, e.g., hate speech, gun control, English-only laws, religious exemptions, abortion, homosexuality, freedom of association, military tribunals and other war on terror issues, and developments in such structural areas as, e.g., state sovereign immunity and the Fourteenth Amendment and commerce powers of Congress. This course is closed to first-year students. Three hours.
