In this clinic, students will work with citizens of several low income communities in Travis and surrounding counties to assist with their quest to improve the quality of the water and wastewater systems in their communities. Clean drinking water and safe sanitation are the foundations of a healthy community. Throughout Texas, many communities still lack these basic components of environmental quality, and must rely on, and expose their children to, polluted well water and failing, unsanitary septic systems. A variety of legal and financial obstacles prevent these communities from gaining access to improved services. Clinic students will work closely with the professor and local attorneys to provide needed legal services and guidance to these communities.
In the clinic, students will perform a variety of tasks to assist the communities in their quest to obtain safe drinking water and sanitation services. These may include: (1) consulting with and counseling citizens: (2) preparing letters, legal memoranda and other documents; (3) meeting with public and private officials; (4) and organizing, participating in, and/or attending public meetings.
Clinical students must complete and document eight hours of clinical work per week during the semester, in addition to class meeting time. The clinic will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
The clinic will meet for two hours per week. There is no prerequisite for the clinic.
