This class is for students who have taken basic and intermediate advocacy classes. Advanced will focus on the strategic development of a civil litigation case. Using real clients and witnesses from outside the law school, students develop their case in state or federal court in as realistic a setting as possible. Emphasis is placed on deposition skills (taken before court reporters), motion practice, discovery, client relations and creative solutions to the client's legal challenges. Students will argue one motion before a sitting judge, conduct a real deposition, and will be responsible for the strategic development and resolution of their case. Learning to use technology in the courtroom will also be a focus of the class. Students will confront technology issues as they relate to discovery and gathering/storing of documents and the presentation of evidence.
This is a 5-credit course consisting of a classroom component, a one-hour legal writing component as well as an evening skills component. The skills component is pass/fail.
Prerequisites: Evidence, Advocacy Survey, Texas Civil Procedure (or equivalent).
Suggested Prerequisite: Civil Litigation Skills (Intermediate).
