The seminar will cover a selection of topics in American legal history starting at the early nineteenth century formative era and ending with the appearance of legal realism. The subject matter will include historical perspectives on a variety of doctrinal fields as well as on legal theory and the legal profession. The readings will introduce competing alternative methodologies for writing legal history and different general interpretations of the development of American law.
