Description

This advanced class combines practical instruction with the performance skills necessary to develop a case from start to finish. The class is organized and structured to allow students to take real depositions with court reporters, draft and then argue motions before a sitting judge, send and respond to discovery, mediate and try a case, and learn all the intricacies of civil litigation practice in as real a setting as possible. The course features the use of "clients" from outside the law school, local jury consultants, judges, lawyers, arbitrators and mediators. A 1-hour course covering E-discovery issues can be taken in conjunction with the full class or as a 1 credit hour class by itself. The E-Discovery class will be taught primarily by Julie Grantham who specializes in issues associated with the means and methods of preserving and collecting electronic evidence and its use in litigation. The class will include practicing attorneys and small group hands-on assignments. The Advanced Civil Litigation class is a 4-credit course (2 hours graded; 2 hours pass/fail). Advanced Civil Litigation consists of both a daytime classroom component and an evening skills component. The E-discovery class is a 1-credit, graded, daytime course. Prerequisites: Evidence, Advocacy Survey. Suggested Prerequisites: Texas Civil Procedure (or equivalent), Intermediate Civil Litigation Skills.
